Renewal process in Ontario
Every five years, drivers in Ontario must renew their licenses. Usually, two to three months before the expiration date, you will receive a postal or email notification. If the mail is misplaced or you fail to receive the email, check your spam folder. Sorry, I forgot it is not a valid justification for not renewing it. Driving when your License is revoked, cancelled, or suspended is against the law. You will need to have a stronger memory because, after age 80, you must renew your License every two years.
- Renewal 1 to 3 years after expiration: A vision test is required.
- A vision test, written knowledge test, the road exams you must pass to get your G2 trial, and G-level License are required for renewal three to ten years after expiration.
- If you renew your License more than ten years after it expires, you must start the application process again as a new driver.
Documents required
In Ontario, there are two options for renewing your driver’s License. The initial one involves visiting a Service Ontario or nearby DriveTest centre in person. The second is done online via the Ontario government’s main website. But only some qualify for the second; we explain whether you do in this section.
Physical Renewal: Bring the necessary paperwork and information with you when renewing your License at one of the offices on-site:
- The number on a driver’s License
- The trillium number, seven digits, is on your driver’s License’s back.
- Personal identity document Postal code (different from your License to validate your legal name, date of birth and signature)
Ontario allows online driver’s license renewals
If a driver meets the requirements listed below, they can renew their driver’s License online:
- You hold a valid G or M class driver’s License that has yet to be revoked or suspended.
- You are licensed in combination classes G1M, G2M, GM1, GM2, M1, or M2 (please note that only the entire portion of the licence will be renewed)
- You haven’t relocated during the previous 30 days.
- You are not required to take any exams (written, road, vision, etc.)
- You are not curing a condition that impairs vision.
- No significant medical issues could impair your performance, judgment, or ability to drive.
- You don’t owe any moving violation-related fines or penalties for speeding, racing, careless driving, intoxicated driving, etc.
Cost for renewing Ontario driver’s License
This is similar to most similar items; you should budget about $90 to renew your driver’s License in Ontario for five years. The cost may change if the renewal time is less than five years or if you are over 76. In addition, it costs $35.75 to update your driver’s license photo. You must update your license photo every ten years because your physical appearance may change.
